Mount Etna Volcano
Europe's
most active volcano, Mount Etna, began to erupt again on Sunday, 27 October
2002. Catania's airport closed. Emergency medical clinic ship
in Catania's harbor. An earthquake damaged hundreds of homes in Santa
Venerina. A large river of magma is heading towards a popular ski
resort in Linguaglossa.
Related? Approximately 440 miles due north of Mount Etna, a strong earthquake on 31 October 2002 caused the deaths of the entire first grade class of the village of San Giuliano di Puglia when their poorly constructed schoolhouse collapsed.
Update: More quakes rock the region on 24 November 2002. Lava flows continue to threaten the resort town of Santa Venerina.
