Featuring,
The Butterfield Trail

Named for Butterfield Overland Stage, which ran from Tipton, Missouri, to San Francisco in the mid-1800's.  In the area around Devils Den, the going was so rough that a mule team was used instead of horses.

The "BFT" is 14-mile loop. Its one of the longest looped trails in the state of Arkansas.  It will take you all day unless you plan to spend a night out.

Trail use permit required. Camping or campfire building is prohibited along the trail inside Devil's Den State Park boundaries, but camping is permitted anywhere within the Ozark National Forest provided the site is 100 feet off the trail and away from a water source.  There are two designated camping areas along the trail:

  1. Waypoint 100 - Rock Hole Camp (named for a large boulder and swimming hole in Blackburn Creek)
  2. Waypoint 110 - Junction Camp (located at the confluence of Blackburn Creek an Lee Creek near the site of the historic community of Anna and Camp Meeting Cemetery)

Start at Devil's Den SP, located in a steep Ozark valley.  Hike north along Lee Creek, leaving the park near camping area "A."  This clockwise traverse of the trail is recommended so as to avoid the ascent of "Hell's Half-mile" at the south end of the park.
