Matewan, West Virginia
On
the banks of the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy, there's a little town that's
almost heaven for off-road enthusiasts. Matewan is the southern terminus
for Trail #10 of the Hatfield-McCoy ATV Park. And, like a scene from
an old western movie, ATV'ers come down from Buffalo Mountain and ride into
town for gear and grub.
Once you arrive in Matewan you'll want to linger and take in some of the local culture.
The people of Matewan are tenacious inhabitants. Historic floods have nearly wiped-out the town more than once. In the 1990's, they build a wall around the town to fend off rising waters. But you might wonder if the wall might also be used to fend off other foe.
The town has a reputation for feuds. Not only is Matewan ground-zero for the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud, but the country's biggest shootout took place in here between union miners and company enforcement.
Despite the towns violent history, you'll find the merchants of Matewan eager to make your visit an experience that will keep you and your friends coming back.
