Bull Island
Bull
Island is located in one of only two wilderness areas on the east coast
classified as a Class 1 refuge - the most pristine and unchanged.
Just a few miles northeast of Charleston's bustling seaport, you can experience
the barrier islands just as the early explorers did. There are ruins
left on the island from one such group of explorers. A plaque near
the "Old Fort" testifies that inhabitants arrived on a ship named
"Carolina." Today, many come to enjoy the solitude of unspoiled
beaches. Others prefer to hike along miles of trail through maritime
forests and wetlands. All who come will be rewarded by encounters
with rare species of birds and animals. The endangered Red Wolf, Loggerhead
Sea Turtle, and American Bald Eagle are just a few of the island's residents.

Adventure Travel Tip
When hiking through the interior of the island, the bugs
are downright oppressive except in Winter. You'll go insane without
a toxic slathering of DEET insect repellant. Better yet, wear
a baja
shirt* and use bug
netting*.
Also, don't be in too much hurry and make your presence known as you hike
along the banks. There are reportedly 1000 alligators on the island.
They usually get out of your way, but you'd be wise not to surprise or
taunt them.
