The footsteps of Antarctic Explorers
Ernest
Shackleton is known as one of the greatest explorers, not because he discovered
the South Pole, rather because of his heroism during failed attempts. With
Scott's expedition in 1901, Shackleton learned of the dangers first-hand.
During his Nimrod expedition in 1907, Shackleton earned the admiration
of generations by making the agonizing decision to turn back within 97 miles
of the pole, rather than risk the lives of his team. In 1914, Shackleton
set sail to be the first to cross the Antarctic, but abandoned the quest
when his ship, Endurance, sank beneath the ice. Thanks to Shackleton’s
remarkable rescue efforts, all 27 crew members survived.
