Northern Ribbon Reef Dive Sites
The
Ribbon Reefs lie off the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland Australia - near
Cooktown - approximately 50 kilometers out to sea, along the edge of the
continental shelf. The long, thin character of the Ribbon Reefs is
shown in the photo at right.
Each Ribbon Reef is numbered in succession from south to north. The southernmost, Ribbon Reef No. 1, is located about 150 kilometers north of Cairns. Ribbon Reef No. 10 lies northeast of Cape Flattery, near Lizard Island.
Lizard Island provides a base of operations for live-aboard dive ships, like the Nimrod. The Nimrod has been sailing between Cairns and Lizard Island for decades, taking divers to the best Dive Sites of the Great Barrier Reef.* Specifically, the "Cod Hole" and "Pixie Pinnacle" are popular sites that attract divers from all over the world.
